There is nothing more cathartic than taking one of my existing paintings that has hung in a gallery and not lit a fire under anyone, or has been relegated to the back of my storage closet, and gesso over the image. The pentimento technique transforms the old image: part of the original painting is allowed to bleed through....like past sins that may be forgiven but not quite forgotten. It provides a wonderful, textured ground for new ideas and a new painting. Wikipedia defines pentimento as:

pentimento (plural pentimenti) is an alteration in a painting, evidenced by traces of previous work, showing that the artist has changed his or her mind as to the composition during the process of painting. The word isItalian for repentance, from the verb pentirsi, meaning to repent.
